Dead trees have been sticking out of the water for about 45 years. The tree trunks under water are worth their weight in gold. 160,000 hectares of tropical rainforest disappeared under water in 1965. The Brokopondostuwmeer is the oldest reservoir in South America. A reservoir where virtually no wood has been felled beforehand, leaving hundreds of thousands of trees, of at least 35 species of tropical hardwood, in place. Because there is no oxygen added, you get beautiful wood here. It is a bit more expensive to cut down, because one pays a double cut tax because replanting is rather "difficult"...
