On the market square in Bremen, directly in front of the historic town hall, stands Roland - a limestone statue over five metres high. Since 1404, it has symbolised the city's rights to freedom and is regarded as a symbol of justice and independence. Equipped with a sword and shield, Roland looks firmly and unwaveringly into the distance. As part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is not only a symbol of the city, but also an important monument to medieval urban culture.
