The well-known pile heads on the beach, seen in abundance along the Dutch and French coast . They can be found along the French Opal Coast , near the picturesque village of Sangatte , just north of Cap Blanc-Nez . When the weather is fine, you can see as far as England from here and the famous "White Cliffs of Dover" are beautifully outlined against the horizon . But this aside , groynes had and still have a purpose , by breaking the tides they counteract the erosion of beaches and dunes . They also provide a home for mussels, crabs, fish spawn and other small marine animals, creating an ideal foraging area for larger fish.
