It was over a hundred years ago that on the clay soils on the west bank of the river IJssel just north of Deventer, a breed of chicken emerged that produced large eggs with speckles. The chickens became known as 'Welsumers', named after a small village of Welsumer.
Well before World War II, Welsumer became a major producer of the brown eggs. The chickens laid even larger eggs than the other popular breed the Barnevelder, which had sprung up around the village of Barneveld at the same time as the Welsumer. It was only in 1921 that the Welsumer chicken first became a separate breed.
Our artists created a combination of spectacular colours and this beautiful Welsumer rooster.
