The great mayor (Larus hyperboreus) is a bird in the gull and tern (Laridae) family. This bird has a white summer plumage with a light grey back. In winter, the head contains dark stripes. The stout bill has a yellow-orange colour and the small eyes are yellow. The food of this aggressive omnivore includes fish, eggs, carrion, insects and berries, but it also kills other birds for food, sometimes even in flight. Its breeding range includes northern rocky coasts and islands, usually near a large colony of seabirds and usually stays within the Arctic Circle. The northern shores of the Atlantic are its main wintering area, but the bird sometimes 's winters along the shores of the North Sea.
