About "Berlin Victory Column with the Goldelse"

About the artwork

This Berlin night shot was taken with the NIKON D90 camera using a long exposure.

The Berlin Victory Column is popularly known as the "Gold Else" because its bronze figure of Victoria, the goddess of victory, is gilded. This gilding and the prominent position of the figure on the Victory Column have led to this nickname, which is ubiquitous in Berlin. The figure itself is a symbol of Prussian victories in the 19th century, particularly in the German-Danish War, the German War and the Franco-Prussian War.
The Victory Column is a monument in the Tiergarten district of Berlin and was erected in 1873. It consists of a sandstone column resting on a red granite plinth. The bronze figure of Victoria, the goddess of victory, known by many as the "Golden Else", is located at the top of the column and is covered in real gold. The column is 67 metres high in total and offers a viewing platform with a view over Berlin.
The name "Goldelse" is therefore an affectionate and colloquial expression that refers to the golden appearance of the Victoria statue and connects Berliners with their city and its landmark.
