Copyright: Christiane Schulze The peonies (Paeonia), also called peonies, are the only plant genus in the peony family (Paeoniaceae). This genus comprises 32 species. The best-known varieties are perennials, i.e. perennial herbaceous plants whose above-ground shoots die back in winter; there are also woody species and varieties that grow mostly as half-shrubs, more rarely as shrubs. The original cultivars are almost always horticultural breeds of the common peony and the milk-white peony. The peony or paeony is a flowering plant in the genus Paeonia, the only genus in the family Paeoniaceae. Peonies are native to Asia, Europe and Western North America. Scientists differ on the number of species that can be distinguished, ranging from 25 to 40, although the current consensus is 33 known species.
