Beautiful sunrise over the Kalahari desert with quiver trees, Namibia.
The Quiver Tree or Tubular Tree is one of the most interesting and characteristic plants of the very hot and dry parts of Namibia and the northwestern part of the cap province in South Africa. The botanical name is Kokerboom. Dichotoma refers to the forked branches of the plant. The plant is called a Socket Tree, because some Bushman and Hottentot tribes used the tough, peelable bark and branches to make tubes for the arrows.
The Kalahari is a very varied area that, besides sand desert, also includes large pieces of steppe and savannah, with grass. The area covers a large part of Botswana and the east of Namibia and parts of Zimbabwe, South Africa and Angola. The vegetated areas are characterised by long stiff grass, prickly bushes and acacias. There are lions, hyenas, different kinds of antelopes, giraffes, meerkats and baboons.
