The Night Battle is traditionally called this painting. In reality, the naval battle at Kijkduin took place during the day, on August 21, 1673. Cornelis Tromp sailed on the Golden Lion and his opponent Sir Edward Spragg on the Royal Prince. The battle is partly hidden behind clouds of smoke and gunpowder. On the right, the Dutch admiral's ship sinks, but Tromp continues the battle from a captured ship.
The Battle of Kijkduin (English: Battle of Texel) was a naval battle near Den Helder between a Dutch and a French-English fleet on August 11, 1673 (Julian calendar: the 21st according to the current Gregorian calendar). It was the last major battle during the Third Anglo-Dutch War.
