At this very moment – life pulsating by the river

by Annette Schmucker

The painting captures a palpably energetic and fleeting scene, in which the pulsating life on a riverbank dissolves into an expressive interplay of colours. Along the water, suggested only as a silhouette, run luminous, golden-yellow and emerald-green streaks of light, lending movement and dynamism to the flowing element. Vague, vertical structures in the background are reminiscent of historic building façades, bridges or pillars, rising majestically from the colourful mist. Through the multi-layered, transparent application of paint, the architecture and the riverside area appear closely interwoven, as if time were standing still for a brief moment. Radiant accents of light in the centre give the impression that the late afternoon sun is beating down on the water’s surface, reflecting dazzling sparks. Cool turquoise and deep blue tones in the lower part of the picture form a harmonious contrast to the warm, fiery ochre and yellow hues. Gentle, vertical smudges and free-flowing brushstrokes convey a sense of splashing water, bustling activity and a light river breeze. The boundaries between defined forms and pure abstraction remain fluid, leaving the viewer room for their own associations. Shimmering textures and delicate layers invite the viewer to delve deeper into the multi-layered atmosphere of this moment. Overall, the artwork exudes a captivating blend of urban vibrancy, warmth and timeless, poetic magic.
