About ‘An Eye for Colour’ by Color Square

This modern collage portrait depicts a woman’s face that is partially concealed behind a striking botanical form. Photography, geometry and graphic patterns are combined to create a playful composition that strikes a balance between surrealism, pop art and modern collage art. The monochrome face contrasts sharply with the soft coral-pink, orange-red and ochre-yellow colour fields.

At the centre is a blue-green organic form reminiscent of a cactus, coral or an enlarged hand. The irregular openings and grainy texture break up the clean circles and rectangles surrounding the portrait. This creates an exciting interplay of concealment and revelation: only one eye, part of the nose and the lips remain visible. This actually lends the gaze extra power and seems to follow the viewer directly from within the collage. The repetition of circular shapes is striking. The large orange-red circle at the top and the ochre-yellow circle at the bottom bring rhythm and balance, whilst a smaller golden circle serves as a playful accent. The generous cream-coloured background gives all the elements ample space and enhances the retro feel.
