Averbode Abbey can look back on a rich history, which already spans ten centuries. It was founded in 1134 on the initiative of Arnold II, Count of Loon. Agriculture was soon practiced, which ensured the quality of life. Throughout the centuries, however, the abbey has known many trials and tribulations: looting, fires, the plague, etc. At the end of the 18th century it was even sold and demolished.
From the 19th century onwards, things started to go up again. Monastic life was resumed and the Abbey became the focus of numerous activities: missionary work, a publishing house, etc. In the 20th century, the Premonstratensians founded several schools. Today, Averbode Abbey is looking to the future, with a wide range of products and a brand new experience centre.
