A Heart of Steel on the Rhine – Beautiful Cologne

by Rolf Schnepp

A heart of steel spans the Rhine: the mighty arches of the Hohenzollern Bridge stretch across the picture, lending the Cologne skyline an unusually graphic character. Behind them rises the cathedral, which here is not the focal point as an isolated landmark, but rather a calm, powerful counterpoint to the delicate steel structure.

The long exposure transforms the Rhine into an almost smooth expanse. Movement dissolves; the surface becomes soft and tranquil, making the massive forms above appear all the more striking. At the same time, the warm tones of the evening light lend the bridge a touch of gold and are subtly reflected in the water. The cooler hue of the Rhine creates a harmonious contrast.

This image was taken at a time of day when Cologne seems, for a brief moment, to hover between the everyday and the evening. Trains, boats and people are still there, yet the long exposure time strips the hustle and bustle of its restlessness. What remains is architecture, light, water and the unmistakable silhouette of Cologne Cathedral.

A picture for all those who see Cologne not just as a collection of famous landmarks, but who love the city’s special atmosphere on the Rhine – tranquil, full of character and with a touch of melancholy, yet far removed from the hectic pace of modern-day Cologne.
