The Dunnock sparrow (Prunella modularis) is a songbird in the Dunnock sparrow family (Prunellidae). Dunnock sparrows grow to 14 centimetres, about the same size as the house sparrow, but are distinguished by the fact that the dorsal stripes continue up to the head while the house sparrow is grey there. This bird has distinct, dark brown stripes on the side, light-coloured legs and a pointed bill. Hedge sparrows are rarely, if ever, seen in groups. The male and female have the same plumage. It has a clear, metallic sound, and sings early in spring, from February onwards. Less often heard in summer. Has so-called 'love whisper song' in the presence of female, but also lets out a similar muffled song in autumn. The whisper song is also familiar to the blackbird.
