The moated castle of Boelare, situated on a bend of the Dender in a vast park,
was about a thousand years ago the seat of the Barony of Boelare. Etienne of Boelare,
mentioned at the end of the 11th century, is the first lord known by name.
The free domain counted twelve villages with
eight magistrates. The baron was the most important person after the count of Flanders.

died out in the 13th century due to a lack of male descendants.
