About Frank Hendriks
Almost sixty, but still wondering about man's journey through life. My photos have to speak - each of them has to say something in itself, that holds a small or a big truth. I try to make the small a little bigger and the big just a little smaller, regardless of whether I am capturing a city, people or just the landscape that, I am afraid, more often than not my view of this world measures up to. I want to move, but also shock. For me, the everyday has an eloquence that usually gives an apparently austere photograph just that extra value, a recognisable characteristic that will seem familiar to anyone even slightly receptive. Many of my most successful photographs, in which the total emptiness or great nothingness wishes to overwhelm us by an unfilled space, loneliness or even an all-encompassing misery, gain intimacy precisely because of a detail, a solitary being somewhere in a corner of the picture, that can give us comfort. Trees, land or water - are they not the elements that never feel safe from a painter's playful strokes? In my best works, in my own way and to a most modest extent, I am again that nineteenth-century artist who tries to give his minuscule vision of reality with brush and paint.
