Perhaps one of the largest slag heaps in South Limburg was that of Maurits State Mine in Geleen. A slag heap is an accumulation of stone waste from underground mining, in this case coal mining. At the time, the mountain ultimately contained 26,000,000 tonnes of stone and rose 172 m above sea level. Maurice Mountain was partly excavated and reused.
