Stralsund (Hanseatic City of Stralsund) is a city in north-eastern Germany, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
Stralsund is also known as the "Gateway to the Island of Rügen" because of its location on the Strelasund, a strait in the Baltic Sea between the mainland and the island of Rügen and to the Rügen Bridge/the old Rügen Dam.
Stralsund's old town with its architectural monuments has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002. Stralsund is also known for the German Maritime Museum with the Ozeaneum Stralsund as a resort and important tourist centre in the southern Baltic Sea region.
