Starry Night, made by Ivana Jelić & Pavle Petrović, based on the painting by Vincent van Gogh, and seen, admired, and photographed during the Amsterdam Light Festival as a canal boat passed by.
The Herengracht is the second of four Amsterdam canals belonging to the ring of canals and lies between the Singel and the Keizersgracht. Especially the Golden Bend is known for its large and beautiful canal houses.
The Herengracht was built in 1612 on the initiative of mayor Frans Hendricksz Oetgens, city carpenter Hendrick Jacobsz, Staets and city planner Lucas Jansz Sinck.
Initially, it was a moat (dug in 1585) for the companies and lines that were located behind the Singel. The moat within the city wall ran parallel to the moat outside the city wall. The Herengracht therefore still shows a kink at the level of the Driekoningenstraat; the outer moat was laid around a stronghold at that height. From ditch to current canal widened, the canal was named Herengracht in 1612, after the rulers of the city of Amsterdam.
