About ‘Portrait of a goldsmith, Werner van den Valckert’
Portrait of a goldsmith, probably, Bartholomeus Jansz van Assendelft, Werner van den Valckert, 1617 oil on panel, h 66cm × w 49.5cm.
The man leans out of a window. In his right hand, he holds a gold ring with a stone. His left hand rests on a touchstone that could be used to determine the gold or silver content of objects. Presumably this is the goldsmith Bartholomeus Jansz van Assendelft. In 1617, the year the portrait was painted, he became judge of the Leiden goldsmiths' guild: hence the touchstone.
