Patrona Halil, Jean Baptiste Vanmour, ca. 1730 - ca. 1737
The extravagant feasts of Ahmed III led to riots. On 28 September 1730, an uprising broke out under the leadership of Patrona Halil, an Albanian sailor. The sultan was deposed and his cousin, Mahmud I, installed as his successor. On the left, the corpses of people who died during the uprising are carried away. This is the only painting in the Calkoen collection that Vanmour signed: his name is on the left-hand side of the stone.
