Neeltje Jans is about 285 hectares in size and lies halfway along the Oosterscheldekering between Schouwen and Noord-Beveland, but nevertheless belongs to the municipality of Veere on Walcheren. The name Neeltje Jans was obtained by a boat which ran aground on the sandbank and which also bore that name, it is an old folk name for the patron goddess Nehalennia.
Neeltje Jans used to be a sandbank in the mouth of the Oosterschelde. By raising the sandbank, the working island was created which was used during the construction of the storm surge barrier. When the work was completed in 1986, Natuurmonumenten and Het Zeeuwse Landschap bought the island and turned it into a nature reserve that is part of Oosterschelde National Park.
A remaining pillar can also be found near the island. This 66th pillar was made around 1980, in case one of the other pillars proved to be faulty, but was never put into use. Since then, the pillar stands alone in its dock. Today, a climbing center is located on the pillar.
Wind turbines have been installed on Neeltje Jans since 1991. The original eight smaller turbines have since been replaced by two wind farms of four turbines each. A third wind farm is currently under construction: Windpark Bouwdokken.[1]
On the island since 2016 stands the Radar Tower
