The koi (Cyprinus carpio carpio), also known as nishikigoi or brocade carp, is the national fish of Japan.[1] Nishiki is the Japanese word for colorful dress, while goi or koi means carp. The koi is a cultivated variety of the common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and - especially in recent years - enjoys great popularity in ornamental ponds. The taxonomic status of the species is uncertain. The East Asian wild carp is Cyprinus rubrofuscus or Cyprinus carpio rubrofuscus. The tendency today is to split up the species. For breeding purposes, koi have been crossed with European mirror carp (Cyprinus carpio carpio), so the koi with the irregular scaling pattern of the mirror carp are then hybrids.
