Kinderdijk Foundation: The nineteen mills of Kinderdijk symbolise the way the Netherlands deals with water. For a long time, they kept dry the land plagued by subsidence and flooding: the Alblasserwaard, once a rugged and damp peatland, but eventually colonised and reclaimed by man. The Kinderdijk mill area is located in the Alblasserwaard between Lek and Merwede, about 25 kilometres from Rotterdam. UNESCO listed the area as a World Heritage Site in 1997.
