The island of Skye (Scottish Gaelic: An t-Eilean Sgitheanach) is the largest and also the most northerly island of the Inner Hebrides.
The Scottish Gaelic name comes from the Norwegian loan word Eilean, which means island, and from the Gaelic sgiath, which means winged. This refers to the shape of the island: the several peninsulas such as Sleat, Minginish, Waternish and Trotternish give the island the shape of a double wing.
The English name of the island would come from Oudnoorse Skið = "ski".
