About the artwork

Officially, the dark-grey thing is called 'main sheet block' a logical word for those who know something about sailing. I have trouble remembering it and quickly say pulley. Besides, this picture mainly makes me think of something other than sails.

Before I say anything about that, let me say a few words about the main sheet. It is attached to the boom (the piece of wood or metal at the bottom of the boat's main sail). Through the pulley runs a yellow and white rope (the mainsheet) which you then use to handle the mainsail. The pulley helps the sailor move the sail smoothly so that it is out over the side of the boat or, on the contrary, almost straight back. So as to make good use of the wind when sailing. And that pulley is useful because it reduces the pulling force on the sail due to the wind.

I took the picture while sailing. The composition of the mainsheet block, the light background, the yellow and white rope and the connection between the block and the boom caught my attention. Because of the metal, it exudes strength. And if you know what it is used for even a little more.

I was reminded of control and letting go. Of grip on a situation. Control. Not just control of the sail but more broadly. For me, it is a metaphor for situations where you want grip and need leeway to let go of the available space in a controlled way.
