For a lot of people the Chrysanthemum has a little boring image, but still it is one of the most sold flowers. It is a flower that lets itself very well process in a wide range of bouquets.
The name of the flower comes from Greek: "chrusos" meaning gold and anthemon meaning "flower".
The flower is native to China and Japan. In these countries, the flower is in high regard. In China the Chrysanthemum was so special that only noblemen were allowed to deal with the plant. The Chinese city of Chu-Hsien (chrysanthemums) is named after the flower.
In Japan the flower got the predicate "national flower". The throne of the former Japanese emperors were completely covered with chrysanthemums, which got the name Chrysanthemum throne. By portraying the flower with sixteen rays, they gave the idea that there was divine power. Big in Japan but also in other parts of Asia, the Chrysanthemum is a symbol for a long and happy life. It was not till 1688 that Jacob Layn brought the Chrysanthemum to the Netherlands.
