About the artwork

MINDER URY, Brandenburg Gate seen from Pariser Platz, 1928.

The Brandenburg Gate (Brandenburger Tor) is the most important gate in Berlin, built in neoclassical style in the period 1788-1791 after the model of the Propylee (the entrance to the Acropolis). The gate stands on Pariser Platz in the Mitte district and marks the end of the boulevard Unter den Linden.

A bright cityscape of Berlin with lots of yellow and blue.

Leo Lesser Ury (Birnbaum, Poland, November 7, 1861 - Berlin, October 18, 1931) was a German painter of Jewish origin, best known for his cityscapes and landscapes. His work is considered to belong to the impressionism movement. He moved with his family to Berlin in 1872. From 1879 to 1880 he studied at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf. He then travelled to Antwerp, Brussels and Paris. He was able to complete his training in Stuttgart, Karlsruhe and Munich, after which he returned to Berlin (1887). He would continue to travel regularly, including to Domburg in 1912 and 1913. In 1893 he joined the progressive Münchner Sezession and in 1903 the Berliner Sezession.
