Less than a two-hour drive from the capital Tirana is Berat, the city of a thousand windows.
Berat is wedged between mountains. Small white houses are built on both sides of the Osum River. When night falls the town is illuminated by thousands of yellow lights from the many houses. A beautiful sight.
Berat is not a city for cars, the roads in the old town are just wide enough for horse and carriage. The origin of the town lies more than 4000 years back in time. When you wander through the narrow streets you are away from the hustle and bustle of the 21st century. Women hang the laundry over the railing of the balcony while men chop wood for the stove. Don't be afraid to get lost, wandering around is really something you should do in Berat. You will automatically stumble upon the most beautiful sights in Berat, with the castle at the top of the mountain being a particular highlight.
