On the edge of the Hijkerveld, in the middle of Drenthe, lies the Kortewegsbos: a small but atmospheric forest that forms a surprising contrast with the vast heathlands and open landscapes around it. The forest is rich in deciduous and coniferous trees, which transform into a palette of warm colours in autumn. In this picture, a wooden bench around a tree takes centre stage, hidden among fallen leaves and bathed in soft, filtered light. The mist between the trees gives the scene a moody and hushed atmosphere.

The bench invites you to take a break while walking through the Kortewegsbos or across the nearby Hijkerveld. Here you experience the silence so characteristic of this Drenthe nature reserve, where flocks of Drenthe Heath Sheep still graze and where nature is largely allowed to take its own course.

Hijkerveld is one of the largest contiguous heathlands in Drenthe. The varied landscape of heathland, fens, woods and old dirt roads makes it a favourite spot for walkers and nature lovers.
