About ‘African woman – Dayamar’ by Willie Roosenbrand Art

Dayamar is an African woman, painted using layered multimedia techniques. The proud woman looks away and is dressed in a traditional yellow robe and traditional yellow headdress. The inspiration for this work came from a portrait by photographer Mark Isarin. The portrait has, in a sense, been rendered anonymous because Dayamar does not look at the viewer. This raises the question of what she is looking at and what we, as viewers, cannot see.
The colours blend beautifully into the interior as only two colours have been used primarily: brown and yellow. But when you get up close, you discover so many other colours shimmering through the layers.
In a sense, one might draw parallels with Johannes Vermeer’s painting: Girl with a Pearl Earring.
