In the service of the Almighty

A golden glow shimmers against the endless blue of the Thai sky. Luang Pho Yai stands unshakeably above the Ang Thong plain. Yet the grandeur of this colossal statue lies not only in its monumental scale. It is also evident in the minutest details. Like tiny ants on the skin of a sleeping giant, two people hang from wafer-thin ropes. They are high-altitude workers in the service of the saint. They hover directly before the gigantic face. One gently polishes the closed eyelid, which directs the gaze inwards. The other rests in the shadow of the mighty nose. Every movement is an act of devotion, a silent dialogue between the transient and the eternal. Whilst Buddha, in the moment of Maravijaya, resists temptation and calls upon the earth as a witness, these climbers tend to his immaculate splendour. In their buckets they carry not mere paint. They carry the preservation of a symbol of absolute willpower and inner peace. The image captures this extreme tension: the colossal, immovable calm of the Enlightened One merges with the dynamic, courageous labour of the here and now. A dizzying dance on the threshold of infinity, keeping the divine pure and radiant for the world.
