About ‘Europe’s volcanic amphitheatre’ by Walter G. Allgöwer

A view of Montaña Guajara, the Alto de Guajara, 2,715 m, is like a silent conversation with time itself. The immense crater walls of the Caldera de las Cañadas open up like an ancient book, its pages made of solidified lava, wind and light. Every boulder tells a tale of eruptions, collapses, of fire that shaped the world, and of silence that preserves it.
The slopes rise in broad, gentle lines, yet their essence remains wild: a rugged amphitheatre, created by the collapse of a gigantic volcano that once touched the sky. Above it all lies the clear light of Teide National Park, a light that sharpens colours and deepens shadows, as if seeking to etch the landscape even more clearly into the memory.
Here, in the Parque Nacional del Teide on Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, Spain, Europe, one encounters a vastness that takes one’s breath away. The gaze does not wander – it finds peace. And as the wind sweeps across the rocks, it seems to whisper something: that even the mightiest forms on Earth will one day become a quiet, beautiful story.
