About ‘contrasting transience’ by anne droogsma

In photography and film, controlling contrast is a technical challenge: how does a photographer get a photo so that both the dark and light areas are still visible? A photo with low contrast (e.g. containing no deep blacks or bright whites) is greyish and often makes a dull impression. A photo with high contrast, on the other hand, contains both deep blacks and bright whites. In the twenty-first century, cameras and film cameras have tools to make overexposed areas visible on a screen or in the viewfinder, allowing the photographer or filmmaker to adjust the aperture.
