When the gods show their true colours

In the mist-shrouded heights of the Khao Kho Mountains, where the sky gently touches the earth of Phetchabun Province, they watch over the silence. At Wat Pa Khasamakhi, the celestial beings – the Thep Thida and Thep But – stand frozen in a procession of light and colour.
It is as though the Thai sun itself had woven its rays into the shimmering gold of their robes. Each figure, a masterful symbiosis of Buddhist devotion and Hindu splendour, bears the pride of Isan in its gaze. The ornate headdresses soar like golden flames, symbols of a spirit that rises above the earthly realm.
A dance of colours
In this photograph, the boundaries between the visible and the spiritual blur:
Rich vermilion and deep black meet the sparkle of emerald and sapphire.
Golden appliqués wrap around the graceful bodies like a protective armour.
The silent presence of the statues seems to carry within them the echo of ancient prayers.
Here, in the heart of Thailand, they are far more than mere statues. They are the guardians of tradition, witnesses to a deep piety that remains alive in every detail of their traditional attire. When the wind sweeps through the mountains, one feels as though one can hear the soft tinkling of their heavenly ornaments – a timeless greeting from the realm of the gods to the world of mortals.
