Transience and peace

Under the open sky of Ayutthaya, the Buddha rests, stretched out in gentle serenity, as if time itself had decided to hold its breath. His body follows the line of the earth, a silent river of stone that tells of becoming and letting go. Golden leaves cling to his face, irregularly applied by many hands – traces of hope, gratitude, unspoken requests. They shimmer in the light and remind us that transience is not the end, but a transformation. The reclining Buddha marks the transition to Nirvana: not a dramatic farewell, but a quiet passing. His eyes are closed, but not in sleep, rather in an inward gaze, to where noise and fear fall silent. Next to him lie lotus blossoms and bright yellow marigolds, fresh, fragrant, alive. They form a silent dialogue between the present and the eternal, between pulsating life and the quiet certainty of the end.
Wat Lokayasutha stands like an open book of history in the ancient royal city of Ayutthaya. The weathered walls and scarred stone tell of centuries of splendour, destruction and renewal. The cracks in the statue hold memories of rainy seasons, of sunshine, of countless generations passing by. Nothing is hidden, nothing is glossed over – and therein lies its dignity. Standing before this figure, one feels an invitation to slow down. Thoughts are allowed to settle like dust after a long journey. The Buddha demands nothing, explains nothing. He is simply there, in complete harmony with the way things are. And perhaps that is exactly what this place offers: the inkling that peace is possible when one stops fighting, and that even in farewell there can be a quiet, golden glow.
