About ‘The gesture of peace’ by Walter G. Allgöwer

In the golden silence of the temple, the Buddha stands as if he is balancing time itself. Light glides over his shining folds like a silent breath, and every line tells of centuries of devotion. The right hand rises calmly, the open face a shield of pure gentleness - the Abhaya mudra, a promise to all beings that fear may dissipate like mist in the morning light.
The left hand sinks downwards, open, receiving and giving at the same time. In the Varada mudra flows a silent offering, a stream of kindness that travels from heart to heart. Here, in Wat Chana Songkhram in Bangkok, the radiance of the gold merges with the warm air of the old neighbourhood. The shadow of the statue falls large and soft against the wall, as if the Buddha were both present and beyond.
It is a moment that crackles like silence, a space in which the world becomes quieter and wider. The statue not only stands - it rests, it carries, it holds. And those who linger in front of it may sense a hint of what its essence embodies: Courage without harshness, generosity without expectation, peace in the splendour of the ephemeral.
