The beating heart of the Métro

Deep beneath the streets of Paris, another world opens up. The Arts et Métiers metro station does not feel like an ordinary station, but rather like the interior of a colossal machine from a bygone future. Copper-coloured walls arch over the platform like the hull of an old submarine, criss-crossed with rivets, portholes and warm light. Here, time seems to flow more slowly – not hectic like on the surface, but carried by the soft echo of the arriving trains.
The station evokes the fantasies of Jules Verne, of steam power, discoveries and a belief in the magic of technology. Amidst steel, glass and bronze, an almost surreal atmosphere emerges: futuristic and nostalgic at the same time. Every glimmer of light is softly reflected on the metal surfaces; every line seems to be part of a grand narrative.
Whilst bustling Paris pulses with life outside, down here lies a quiet interlude of movement and waiting. People come and go, yet the station remains like a hidden theatre of modernity. Arts et Métiers is more than a place of transit – it is a tribute to inventiveness, industrial aesthetics and the beauty of urban spaces, hidden beneath the Île-de-France.
