The Sweeping Monk and the Lightness of Everyday Life

A small clay monk stands there, as though he had mastered the art of serenity in a single broom made of twigs. His yellow robe glows like a ray of sunshine that has strayed into the temple, and his quiet smile reveals that, for him, sweeping is less a duty than a joy. With his eyes closed, he sweeps across the floor, as though he were sweeping away not only dust but also little worries.
The broom rustles softly, almost like a trusted friend whispering to him: ‘Keep it up, we’re bringing order to the world.’ And the monk nods to himself, content with every sweep he makes. Perhaps he imagines the temple itself smiling a little as it watches the tiny figure working so devotedly.
At Wat Hua Wiang Rangsi, amongst the quiet paths of Tambon That Phanom, this scene gives rise to a moment of gentle cheerfulness. A monk sweeping as if it were a small ritual of happiness. A temple bathing him in golden light. And a sense that even the simplest of actions can bring a smile when performed with an open heart.
