Midsummer in the Allgäu region at the Friedenslinde

On the Wittelsbacher Höhe, summer lies like a silent promise. The freshly mown grass draws bright lines across the slope, as if someone had gently combed the landscape. Watching over everything is the Friedenslinde, an old lime tree whose crown rests broad and calm in the sky. It stands there like a thought that has remained while everything else changes.
The tractor ploughs its path with deliberate patience, almost reverently, as if it knows the history of this place. Haymaking is work, but also a ritual: an interplay of man, machine and season, embedded in the gentle slopes of the Allgäu. The scent of grass mingles with warm earth, and the air seems to become lighter the further the view glides into the Iller Valley.
A wide, clear sky stretches above the scene. A single cloud drifts slowly by, as if it had time. Up here, at 881 metres, haste loses its meaning. The lime tree evokes peace, not as a grand word, but as a quiet presence: in the humming of insects, in the rhythmic work, in the knowledge that this harvest is part of a cycle.
Europe seems distant and yet tangible, condensed in this hillside in Bavaria, where nature and culture are not at odds with each other. Everything is simple – and precisely because of this, it is quietly beautiful.
