Golden splendour and white silence

Beneath the brilliant blue of the Thai sky, two worlds that are inextricably intertwined meet at Wat Hua Wiang Rangsi. In the foreground, the Naga—that mythical serpent-dragon—winds its way, its scales glistening like liquid silver and its golden ornaments catching the sunlight. As the awe-inspiring guardian of the water and the spiritual gates, he seems to have risen directly from the depths of the Mekong to protect the sanctuary of Nakhon Phanom with his primeval power.
Yet behind the dragon’s wild, magnificent dynamism lies perfect stillness. In pure white, the standing Buddha rises, meditation made flesh against the infinite blue. His raised hand forms the Abhaya-Mudra, the gesture of fearlessness, which hangs over the land like a gentle promise: “Fear not, for the path is prepared.” In the centre of his palm shines the golden Dharmachakra, the Wheel of the Teaching, whose spokes turn ceaselessly to carry the wisdom of mindfulness in all directions.
Here, in the gentle breeze of That Phanom, protection and salvation merge. The Naga safeguards the earthly, whilst the Buddha points towards the transcendent. It is a moment of pause, in which time seems to stand still and the heart accepts the invitation to follow the Wheel of Dharma into freedom.
