About ‘Golden hour over Funchal’ by Walter G. Allgöwer

The sun leans towards the Atlantic, as if it wants to pause for a moment before sinking into the sea. Its light spreads across the surface of the water like liquid gold, leaving a soft, shimmering trail as far as the horizon. A gentle transition between day and night settles over Funchal, a breath of warmth and farewell.
The harbour lies quietly beneath the panorama, the cruise ships seem like patient travellers who have adopted the rhythm of the island. They reflect the last light of day as the city slowly fills with shadows. Houses, terraces and streets nestle against the steep slopes as if they had learnt to flow with the terrain instead of resisting it. The hills in the background darken, but their silhouettes preserve the shape of the island like a silent promise.
The sky speaks of vastness and movement: Clouds glide leisurely along, coloured by orange, blue and a hint of purple. Europe seems far away here, almost secondary, while the ocean dominates the picture and makes time relative. At this moment, Funchal is not a place of departure or arrival, but a gentle space in between - where light fades and memory begins.
