About ‘An evening in Verona’ by Walter G. Allgöwer

In the gentle twilight, a bluish veil descends over Verona, as if the city were breathing more calmly, more deeply, in time with the rhythm of the Adige. The river winds its way through the old town like a silvery ribbon, reflecting the last lights of the day and carrying them away into the wide Adige Valley. Above it spans the Ponte Pietra, ancient and steadfast, a stone memory that preserves centuries of footsteps, voices and longings.
The roofs glow in warm terracotta, nestled close together like familiar stories. Slender towers and steeples rise into the evening sky, their silhouettes dark against the fading blue. Between narrow alleys and ochre-coloured facades, the light of the lanterns begins to flicker – a quiet promise of night, of conversations in small squares, of wine and music behind open windows.
Here, Europe seems tangible in its layers of time: Roman stones, medieval walls, Venetian elegance. Veneto breathes history, yet nothing feels heavy; everything flows like the Adige itself – calm, unwavering, full of memory.
And as the day passes, a feeling of delicate eternity remains: as if Verona pauses for a moment to marvel at its own beauty in the twilight.
