A black Buddha in the golden choir

In the quiet penumbra of the venerable Wat Pho, the gilded statues of Buddha line up like guardians of wisdom - each a shining spark of awakening. In the Bhumispara mudra, the gesture of touching the earth, they dwell in the moment of enlightenment: Gautama invokes the earth as a witness as the darkness of ignorance lifts. Their golden bodies shine like suns, wrapped in orange-coloured robes that look like flaming veils of knowledge.
But in the centre of the golden row sits a Buddha in matte black - silent, dignified, rich in contrast. He seems to embody the depth of the spirit, the inexpressible that lies beyond splendour and form. Like a shadow of the absolute, it reminds us that enlightenment is not only light, but also the penetration of darkness.
The ornately decorated pedestals support the statues like altars of time, adorned with floral patterns and colours that speak of devotion. Art and spirituality, past and present merge here. The room breathes devotion, and those who pause for a moment may sense a hint of the silence in which awakening occurs - beyond words, beyond the world.
