About ‘The quiet canal’ by Studio Mirabelle

This work is based on a photograph I took in Amsterdam. It was almost winter and I remember it was about to rain; the water was freezing cold. The canal lies calm, the boats half in hibernation, the many bicycles waiting for their owners, and right in the middle stands the Westerkerk.

My working method remains the same: first take a photograph, then convert it layer by layer into photographic art. I add textures, polish lines and push the image just beyond the recognisable, actually right into that area where photography and painting meet.

In the editing process, I let go of reality a little and worked with soft paint structures and subtle digital brushstrokes. The details fade towards the edges, automatically drawing your gaze to the tower. The colours have been deliberately muted: enough atmosphere, but not so much that the image becomes heavy.

The result is a calm, dreamy city portrait that shows the everyday charm of Amsterdam, but in a style that feels almost painterly.
