Arthur Dove (August 2, 1880, Canandaigue, New York - November 23, 1946) was an American painter from a wealthy family. He was one of America's first abstract painters.
Dove's work was based on nature. He referred to the abstract forms drawn from a landscape as an extraction.
Dove invented an experimental technique, hand-mixing oil or paint over a wax emulsion. The pigment of the paint then sticks to the wax molecules.
