The present Heerhugowaard arose as an agglomeration between the villages of Zuid, De Noord and 't Kruis, whereby Zuid firstly disappeared as an independent core and completely merged into Heerhugowaard, which started as a ribbon village along the Middenweg, with offshoots along the Hondeweg (now Van Veenweg), among others. Through expansion in the nineties of the twentieth century, 't Kruis grew more and more to Heerhugowaard. De Noord is still a separate village, only the south has been absorbed into Heerhugowaard. Other hamlets, such as Butterhuizen, are slowly being incorporated into Heerhugowaard as well.
