Top of façade Kleine Vleeshal on Lange Nieuwstraat in Utrecht. The Kleine Vleeshal is a 15th-century building of the former butchers' guild in Utrecht. It was in use as a public slaughterhouse and as a sales location for meat products. At the beginning of the 15th century, the guilds in Utrecht had considerable power. At this time, the meat house of the Vleeshouwersgilde was located near the Utrecht city hall and, given their activities, it was stipulated that the members of this guild were the only ones allowed to pass through the city with long knives. On 21 August 1425, Vleeshouwers took sides in the struggle for power, went to the house of Utrecht mayor Beernt Proys on Oudegracht and murdered him in his bed. The murderers went unpunished. The photo was taken in the evening of 1 March 2014.Dark Utrecht. That's the name of my series of photos of Utrecht places after sunset.
