It is 770 metres long, the granite breakwater at the entrance to the port of Deauville, the most fashionable seaside resort on the Flower Coast. The tidal range on the English Channel is up to 16 metres and sets the pace for all skippers calling at the Port des Marinas de Deauville.
the harbour. The entrance is a passage between two worlds. On the port side, Trouville greets you with its old alleyways climbing up the hillside. To starboard, the small coastal river Touques leads to the Vieux Port de Deauville. Sleek Bénéteau yachts are moored there, sailing dreams in France's national colours of blue, white and red. Two black and white striped towers mark the lock to the inner harbour. The Deauville Yacht Club has been based next to it since 1928. Then the casino is reflected in the harbour basin. Coco Chanel was once inspired by the fishermen's work shirts for her striped shirt La Marinière. In the mid-1970s, the old harbour was bursting at the seams.
A new harbour was needed. Jacques Labor and Jean-Jacques Orzinie built it as a private harbour for 900 boats at the mouth of the Touques. The sandy beach of Deauville with its parasols and planches is right on the doorstep. Hollywood stars such as Harrison Ford, Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas, who came to Deauville for the American Film Festival, once lounged on this 643 metre-long catwalk by the sea. Today, their cabins are the starting point of a maritime promenade that leads from the beach to the Pont des Belges. The concert of the many masts accompanies the maritime stroll and makes the route resound. That's the sound of seafaring!
