The adoration of kings, Hendrick ter Brugghen, 1619
The little Jesus sits on his mother's lap with Mary while the three kings bring him gifts. It is striking that the figures are packed together in rather stiff, static poses. The style that Ter Brugghen used for his time was old-fashioned: the bright use of colour reminds us of the Mannerists. The realism, especially in the child's face, is reminiscent of the work of the Italian painter Caravaggio.
